The 13 airports operated in Mexico, successfully upgraded to Level 2 Reduction in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme

January 18, 2024

VINCI Airports is proud to announce that the 13 Mexican's airports operated by OMA, of which VINCI Airports is the main shareholder, have successfully upgraded to Level 2 Reduction in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. A new achievement that comes 10 months only after being certified ACA level 1.

Aligned with VINCI Airports' environmental policy and the objective to reach net zero emissions on our scopes 1 & 2 by 2050 at the latest, the13 Mexican airports take action to reduce their direct carbon emissions while preserving biodiversity, natural areas, and protecting natural resources. To achieve Level 2, airports had to demonstrate effective carbon management procedures, including setting clear objectives and demonstrating a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This includes deploying technologies that save energy and/or reduce the use of fossil fuels, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Key actions have been defined to make positive contributions to the environment: in 2022, solar panels were successfully installed at all airports, generating approximately 18% of the total electrical consumption for the year. Additionally, battery banks were implemented at various airports, an innovative technology project that operates in conjunction with photovoltaic cells to store energy. This initiative allows for a reduced consumption of grid electricity during peak hours, further enhancing their commitment to sustainable energy use.

"We are proud that our operations are geared towards fostering a comprehensive positive impact on mobility, managing our operations and airports sustainably and people-centrically, creating benefits for the communities and environments in which we operate," declared Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA

As a mark of its long-term commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, VINCI Airports is the first international contributor to the ACI’s ACA programme, with 53 accredited airports, including 4 within the first airports in the world to obtain Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 5.

The world’s leading private airport operator, VINCI Airports operates more than 70 airports in 13 countries. Thanks to its expertise as a global integrator, VINCI Airports develops, finances, builds and manages airports by providing its investment capacity and its know-how in optimizing operational performance, modernizing infrastructure and managing their operations and environmental transition. VINCI Airports is the first airport operator to have committed to an international environmental strategy in 2016, to achieve the goal of net zero emissions across its entire network by 2050.
